How to Stay Motivated as a Small Business Owner

For small business owners, motivation is a powerful psychological force that can bring essential goals within arm’s reach. Despite our best efforts, it can be challenging to remain motivated all the time. Declines in physical or mental health, a drop in enthusiasm or poor routine can all impact your motivation.

Continue reading to discover four tips that can help you foster a goal-oriented, motivated mindset:

Develop a Routine to Stay on Schedule
As a small business owner, your days are your own; that can, unfortunately, lead to struggles for some entrepreneurs, especially new ones who are more familiar with the structure of an office job or traditional working hours.

Creating a daily routine, then, can help you stay motivated by avoiding distractions and alleviating any tendencies toward procrastination that can disrupt your business goals. If you’re unsure where to start, consider writing out all your objectives for the week and breaking them down into manageable, daily tasks. Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, your routine should take advantage of when you’re feeling most productive.

Make Time for Your Social Life
Owning a small business is a significant commitment of time, energy and money. If you put all of your efforts into your career, you might find yourself shortchanging valuable connections with your friends and family. Fostering beneficial relationships outside of work is essential; they can be a powerful place of refuge during stressful situations or help you feel appreciated during times of celebration.

If you’re struggling to maintain your social calendar in the face of your work responsibilities, consider scheduling weekly or monthly calls and visits with loved ones and friends. Fun activities like playing games, walking pets or attending a sports match can give you valuable time to destress and reignite your motivation.

Celebrate Your Achievements
When your entire staff is comprised of you — the owner — there isn’t anyone else to praise you for a job well done or recognize your hard work. Without this positive feedback, staying motivated becomes challenging. Encourage yourself by planning a series of rewards for achieving certain goals. The prizes can be a mix of small or large, personal or professional, depending on the milestones you hit and what your budget allows.

For instance, small rewards can be a walk around the block to your favorite coffee shop for a sweet treat or a new company laptop once you hit a set follower goal on social media.

Foster Positive Mental Health
Running your own business is a labor of love that’s often associated with busy days, long hours and a constantly growing list of responsibilities. Many small business owners find themselves struggling with mental health concerns such as chronic workplace stress, burnout and anxiety, all of which can result in lowered motivation.

When you feel yourself getting overwhelmed or struggling to stay motivated, try taking some of the following steps to get yourself back on track:

  • Eat healthy meals – Food is essential for keeping you happy and healthy. If you’re ignoring your hunger in favor of logging more hours, your business may suffer while you struggle.
  • Get enough sleep – When your body isn’t getting enough sleep, you can become overwhelmed with fatigue, irritability and a lack of enthusiasm; this can make it difficult to stay motivated and complete important tasks or goals. Sufficient, high-quality sleep is essential for staying motivated.
  • Take breaks – Walking around the neighborhood, socializing with a favorite customer or watching an informative video can reset your mood and help organize your thoughts.
  • Talk about your struggles – No one should go through difficult times alone. If your lack of motivation is due to a downturn in your business or a rough patch in your personal life, it’s important to air these concerns with a trusted colleague, friend or professional. Venting can often make people feel better, plus with their distance from your profession, they can provide additional insight you might have overlooked.

Motivation can transform another boring day at the office into a vehicle for your professional and financial success. Fostering this feeling is important for your short- and long-term satisfaction, as it can give you the energy to tackle problems and find inventive solutions.
